He brings works from both countries with him to Hamburg. One is criminally underestimated in Germany and therefore played far too rarely, and another one has never been performed before. However, the programme opens with an excursion to the south: to Giuseppe Verdi and his overture from »La forza del destino«.

Three very different musical characters meet in this British visit: a young Frenchwoman, an American classic and Sergei Rachmaninov, the »last Romantic« in music history. What an opportunity for the new chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra Sir Antonio Pappano and the Dutch violinist Janine Jansen to exhibit their versatility! Imagine what might have become of Lili Boulanger, who composed »Of a Spring Morning« in 1918 at the age of 25? She sadly died soon thereafter so we will never know. But one thing is certain: she was one of the greatest talents of her generation. One man who did make the leap from promising hopeful to one of his country’s leading composers was Samuel Barber, whose Violin Concerto, Op. 14, premiered in 1941, enjoys enduring popularity. Speaking of popularity: Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is in a league of its own. The third movement of the work, which was premiered in Saint Petersburg in 1908, has melted the hearts of generations of concertgoers.

At least since 2020, when she gave her rousingly acclaimed début at the Salzburg Festival in Così fan tutte, Joana Mallwitz has figured in the top echelon of international conductors. She entered the festival’s history as the first woman to conduct a new opera production, and became a darling of the audience with her at once engaged and effortless artistry. Since 2018 she has also enriched the music life of Nuremberg as the city’s general music director and impassioned musical communicator, and in 2023/24 she will become the principal conductor of the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra. For her eagerly awaited BRSO début she has chosen classic repertoire items that demand utmost precision and a fresh approach. On one of her riveting video tours we can already follow her through the rhythmic complexities of Beethoven’s Seventh. As soloist, the BRSO greets the Dutch violinist Janine Jansen, a welcome guest of the orchestra since 2012.
