»The founding of this orchestra is a deeply necessary idea that could deepen and enrich classical music for generations,« says conductor Sir Simon Rattle about the Chineke! Orchestra. Founded in 2015 by the British double bass player Chi-chi Nwanoku, it is the first professional symphony orchestra in Europe that is largely made up of people of colour and members of ethnic minorities. After an impressive debut, Chineke! returns to the Elbphilharmonie, and once again the motto is »promoting change and celebrating diversity in classical music!« The highlight of the concert is Max Richter’s »Vivaldi Recomposed«, one of the most successful compositions of recent years, which immerses Vivaldi’s famous »Four Seasons« in a poignant, ethereal sound. Nigerian Fela Sowande, on the other hand, combines European classical music with West African traditions. The »Handpan Concerto« by the young British composer Cassie Kinoshi, which celebrates its world premiere in June 2024, will also be performed.
