Sir Simon Rattle

Sir Simon Rattle (Conductor), Mark Padmore (Tenor), Camilla Tilling (Soprano), Magdalena Kožená (Mezzo-Soprano), Andrew Staples (Tenor), Roderick Williams (Bariton), Georg Nigl (Bariton), Augsburger Domsingknaben, Bavarian Radio Chorus, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
If Sir Simon could only take one work with him to a desert island, it would be Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. According to the BRSO Chief Conductor, “there is no better way to start the new season than with this profound, very personal spiritual journey.” This music is closer to perfection than almost anything written before or since. Just think of the famous alto aria “Erbarme dich.” Rattle, the BRSO, and the Bavarian Radio Chorus have been waiting for this moment for three years. Fortunately, this is the same exquisite line-up of vocal soloists as the previously planned concert that had to be cancelled at short notice due to the pandemic, and which could only be watched via livestream. This line-up includes the British tenor Mark Padmore, one of the most charismatic Evangelists of our time. For the BRSO, it represents a most joyful reunion with a long-standing artistic companion and former Artist in Residence.

Sir Simon Rattle (Conductor), Andrew Staples (Tenor), Magdalena Kožená (Mezzo-Soprano), Elsa Dreisig (Soprano), Sabine Devieilhe (Soprano), Linard Vrielink (Tenor), Liam Bonthrone (Tenor), Tareq Nazmi (Bass), Bavarian Radio Chorus, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
“I have an indescribable desire to write an opera once again.” Mozart’s wish, expressed in 1777, was finally fulfilled in the fall of 1780, when he received a commission from Munich to write a grand opera seria for the upcoming carnival season. The excellence of the Munich (formerly Mannheim) orchestra, and the subject matter involving the conflict between divine law and human passion, between duty and love, inspired Mozart to write one of his most elaborate and innovative stage works. Idomeneo has long been one of Rattle’s favorite pieces. As with Haydn’s Creation, Mozart’s first operatic masterpiece will give Rattle the opportunity to work intensively with the chorus and to further deepen his involvement with historical performance practice in Munich. He will be joined by a superb cast of singers: Andrew Staples in the demanding title role, Sabine Devieilhe and Magdalena Kožená as the touching passionate lovers Ilia and Idamante, and Elsa Dreisig as the jealous, desperate Elettra.

Simon Rattle and Magdalena Kožená will give a quite unusual chamber recital together with friends from London and Berlin – especially for BRSO subscribers. In some of the songs Sir Simon will play the piano, but others are accompanied by a string quartet or wind ensemble, adding choice colours to Magdalena Kožená’s mezzo. Owing to the unusual instrumentation, the chosen works are rarely heard in the concert hall and display a vivid panorama of European art song. A rare highlight!

“The Mount Everest of music”: that’s what American stage director Peter Sellar’s once called Bach’s St Matthew Passion. Now Simon Rattle will scale this summit of western music with his future Munich ensembles, the BRSO and the Bavarian Radio Chorus. The choice team of vocal soloists likewise raises expectations. A key role is conferred upon the Evangelist, who not only relates the story of the Passion, but participates in and responds to it inwardly as a witness. With British tenor Mark Padmore this part will be taken by one of the most charismatic Evangelists of our time. For the BRSO it marks a happy reunion with a longstanding artistic friend – and a former artist-in-residence.
