A 3,500-year-old Chinese mouth organ, three altarpieces from the early 16th century, and a mythological firebird: these elements form a concert program of superb sonic charm. Composer Unsuk Chin's »Šu« for Sheng and orchestra features the Sheng, played by virtuoso Wu Wei. Long before Harry Potter, the realm of magic was divided into white and black, good versus evil. Stravinsky's "The Firebird" depicts such a clash in stark rhythms and colors, set in a Russian fairytale world. A sorcerer battles a prince and princess aided by the elusive Firebird. Hindemith's Mathis Symphony features St. Anthony fighting temptation, inspired by a famous altarpiece.
