A three-part sound-space experience celebrating György Ligeti's 100th birthday. Featuring surprises, contrasts, instruments, voices, and 100 metronomes, the program spans the Renaissance to the 21st century. Ligeti, a pioneering composer of New Music, experimented with all musical parameters. His large-scale orchestral works, choral music, and rhythmic harpsichord pieces will be performed by Alain Altinoglu and the hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt at the Alte Oper.

Rhythmania explores rhythm in music, from the ticking of metronomes to the stomping of Stravinsky's ballet and the pulse of "Short Ride in a Fast Machine." Experience extremes: primordial sounds, dense scores like Ligeti's "Atmosphères," Strauss marches, and Stravinsky's chaotic "Le sacre du printemps." Finally, "Short Ride" offers breathless excitement. Composer John Adams likens it to a thrilling, yet regretful, sports car ride. (approx. 100 minutes)
