Sonata for violin and piano is one of Debussy's most beloved and performed chamber music works. It was his final completed piece and was created during a difficult time: he was suffering from terminal cancer, and the First World War was still ongoing. A sort of farewell, then, but the music is also imaginative and joyful. Debussy wrote to a friend that the music is "an example of what can be accomplished by a sick man in wartime."At this all-French soup concert, we also hear music by Pauline Viardot-Garcia, born in 1821 in Paris. She had a brilliant career as a mezzo-soprano with successes at the Paris Opera and tours across Europe. Additionally, she was a composer and wrote operas and songs, including the warmly melodic 6 morceaux, written for her son Paul.French-born violinist Gabriel Cornet joined the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016. In this program, he is accompanied by compatriot pianist Tom Grimaud. Wilhelm Peterson-Berger is one of our foremost national romantic composers, beloved by many for his three collections of Frösö Flowers for piano, among others. The bright atmosphere and melodies that make us dream of nature and the Swedish summer are also found in the suite Opus 15 for violin and piano.British-American Rebecca Clarke (1886–1979) was a highly skilled violist and violinist and a pioneer among female composers. In the impressionistically coloured Midsummer Moon, she entices with the full range of the violin and the orchestral breadth of the piano, depicting the moonlit midsummer evening.In between, American John Novacek's wonderfully humorous, insanely virtuosic, and outrageously entertaining Four Rags, ragtime music in four parts. Welcome to a soup concert dedicated to the wonderful music country of Czechia. While most people are familiar with and enjoy Dvořák, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's cellist Hanna Dahlkvist and guest pianist Darya Tchaikovsky show that there is so much more.First, we hear music by the extremely talented conductor and composer Vítezslava Kaprálová (1915–40). She passed away at the age of 25 from tuberculosis but managed to compose an impressive amount of music. She also wrote a series of excellent chamber music works, such as the explosive Deux ritournelles for cello and piano.Vítezslava Kaprálová studied with Bohuslav Martinu, and from him, we hear the brightly colored and rhythmically vibrant third cello sonata – one of his most beloved pieces. Martinu, in turn, studied with Josef Suk, who was Antonín Dvořák's favorite student at the Prague Conservatory. They also got to know each other personally, and Josef Suk later married Dvořák's daughter Otilie. Suk's music is characterized by a flowing melody and lyrical passion, as heard in his Ballad and Serenade, which at times recalls Brahms's late chamber music.***Menu: Broccoli soup with parmesan. Three string musicians from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra are joined by pianist Terés Löf in Gabriel Fauré's youthfully fresh and outgoing first piano quartet. It is one of his most beloved major chamber music works, and the French Academy of Fine Arts also awarded the quartet with its prestigious Prix Chartier.Fauré's music ranges from light salon music to musical romanticism on the brink of modernism. Fauré made a significant impact on the French music scene, serving as an organist at the Saint-Sulpice Church in Paris, conductor at the Madeleine Church, and for many years as a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. Among his students were Maurice Ravel and Nadia Boulanger.Claudia Bonfiglioli is the section leader in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's second violin section, violist Catarina Skoog Aquilonius celebrates her 20th anniversary with the orchestra this year, and Marie Macleod is the principal cellist. Terés Löf is one of the country's most accomplished pianists . Bo-Gustaf Thorell has been a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's first violin section for over 40 years. Now, he takes the stage and forms a trio together with his son Daniel Thorell and the orchestra's pianist Stefan Lindgren.Johannes Brahms' first piano trio has almost symphonic proportions. After critical comments from Clara Schumann, Brahms' great and unfortunate love, this trio was almost consigned to the flames. Luckily, the self-critical Brahms revised the music instead, several decades after its first publication, and it is that version that we hear here.Laura Netzel's (1839–1927) romantic music gained great attention during the 19th century, especially in France where she had studied under the famous Charles-Marie Widor. In the early 20th century, she was one of Sweden's most successful composers internationally and broke new ground with her piano concerto. Two piano quartets – one modern and one romantic classic. They are, of course, very different in style, but the intensity and melancholic expressions unite these two works. The music is performed by three string musicians from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra together with pianist Anna Christensson.British composer Charlotte Bray (born 1982) composed the piano quartet Replay in 2011. In ten minutes, she creates a world that begins in a sort of lament, then escalates in intensity before the music thins out and slowly dies away, as if from exhaustion.Johannes Brahms' third piano quartet in C minor is one of the finest works in the genre – a masterpiece that many consider to be his most personal and autobiographical music. Embedded in the notes are both his anguish for his sick friend Robert Schumann and his forbidden feelings for Schumann's wife, Clara Schumann. Two wind players and a percussionist from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, together with a guesting wind player and percussionist, present music ranging from Monteverdi to Joakim Agnas, who is the orchestra's principal trumpeter and also a composer.In between, there’s a wide variety of pieces, including Swedish Lisa Streich’s Apelsin (Streich was the focus of Konserthuset’s Composer Weekend Festival this spring), a trio by Poulenc, as well as a special arrangement of Mozart’s famous variations on Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. French composer Gabriel Fauré's music shines with melodic charm, sprinkled with a touch of nostalgia. In small pieces like Après un rêve (After a Dream) and Sicilienne for cello and piano, it's easy to imagine a Paris bathed in romantic glow. Exquisitely beautiful is Pavane opus 50, one of Fauré's most beloved pieces often performed in its orchestrated version.Johan Fransén, alternate section leader in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's clarinet section, along with Mikael Sjögren, alternate section leader in the cello section, and the orchestra's pianist Stefan Lindgren, form a trio in a program entirely dedicated to Gabriel Fauré.As a concluding highlight, we hear Fauré's exquisite piano trio from 1923. In the first movement, there is a thoughtfulness bordering on melancholy, yet it is not sorrowful music. The second movement is dreamy and heartfelt, while the third is full of energy and strong contrasts. By around 1910, Fauré had begun to experience hearing problems, and when he composed this piano trio – one of his last completed works – he was likely completely deaf.***Menu: Green pea soup with Västerbotten cheese. Music for string quartet by two composers not primarily associated with chamber music: Bedrich Smetana and Giacomo Puccini. In 2024, the 200th anniversary of Czech composer Bedrich Smetana's birth is celebrated. He is best known for his Moldau, but also wrote a wealth of other music – such as the string quartet From My Life. Sparkling romantic music that describes episodes in Smetana's life.2024 is also a year worth commemorating for Puccini: he passed away exactly 100 years earlier. Like Smetana, it is not chamber music that made him famous, but operas. But Puccini also loved the string quartet. I crisantemi is mournful music, an elegy for his friend Amadeo di Savoia. The chrysanthemum flower is a symbol of death, among other things. Some of the melodies in this music were reused in Puccini's opera Manon Lescaut, which became his first major success.Violinist Daniela Bonfiglioli has been a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 2011, Emma de Frumerie since 2010. Viola player Catarina Skoog Aquilonius celebrates her 20th anniversary in the orchestra this year.
