For his second concert as the new Chief Conductor of the BRSO, Simon Rattle has also chosen a piece that is very dear to him: Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. He once said in an interview that Haydn and Mahler were the two composers for whom he needed no translation; they had come to live with him. Similar to Haydn’s Creation, Mahler’s music is about the whole world – but a world that, only 100 years later, is already showing traces of considerable degradation. Mahler, especially in his Sixth Symphony and its devastating final movement, heralds the totality of human experience in the modern age. It is a work that Rattle considers an “icon,” and with his performance he joins the great Mahler tradition of the BRSO and its former chief conductors. Simon Rattle was already enthusiastic about the music of Betsy Jolas as a student, saying it was “like a late summer day, like a premium wine, full of character and color.” It was only much later that he got to know the French-American composer personally. The new piece by the 97-year-old, who for him remains youthfully wise, will “blend wonderfully with Mahler’s wild, timeless Sixth.”

A cleverly woven programme in which demise comes first: Sir Simon Rattle begins by letting Tristan and Isolde “lament, drown, and sink” in their “swelling, welling, resounding, flowing, urgent, vibrant” yearning for love. However, this sensation that has been transposed into music by Wagner along with its obsessive tragedy finally dissolves into the peaceful, contemplative atmosphere of birdsong, the babbling of a brook, footsteps, and a cleansing thunderstorm: Beethoven’s Pastoral transforms the walk of a city dweller in nature into an onomatopoeic experience and is thus decidedly reminiscent of Rattle’s inaugural concert as Chief Conductor that featured Haydn’s Creation. Between breathtaking harmonies and an intimate finale lies a substantial new orchestral work by Thomas Adès, composed for the 75th anniversary of the BRSO. Greatness in every respect.

In 1982, Rafael Kubelík recorded Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances with the BRSO in Munich’s Herkulessaal. This is one of the reasons that this concert serves as Sir Simon Rattle’s homage to the former chief conductor. It begins with the colorful and somewhat gentler second series of Dvořák’s folk-inspired composition, in which melancholy and poetic nuances mingle with the world of exuberant dance. Violist Timothy Ridout then makes his BRSO debut in the extensively lyrical passages of Martinů’s Rhapsody-Concerto. And finally, the brass gets has a chance to shine: nine trumpets (sounding as if there were at least ninety) dominate Janáček’s Sinfonietta – a work that would have surely become popular even without its famous celebratory fanfare. But it wouldn’t take your breath away and have such an overwhelming impact otherwise.

The piece acts as a fitting opening for the decidedly monumental work that follows: Mahler’s Seventh, to which Rattle turns his attention after having already performed the Sixth and Ninth with the BRSO. Mahler found it particularly difficult to complete the work at the time. While trying to compose an appropriate opening, he suffered from a debilitating writer’s block that plunged him into deep depression. On a rowing trip across Lake Wörthersee, he is said to have conceived the redemptive idea for the first movement – a tenor horn solo that leads directly into the emotional cosmos of the symphony.

This programme is unusually diverse even for the musicians of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Yet the musical worlds of Ligeti, Wagner, and Webern, which merge more or less seamlessly in this concert, are not as far apart as one might think. And in the second half there is Bruckner’s auratic Ninth Symphony, a true monolith. “It seems that the Ninth is a limit. If one wishes to go beyond it, one must leave this world. Those who wrote a Ninth were already too close to the hereafter” – this was Schönberg’s prophetic statement regarding Mahler, who died without ever having heard his Ninth Symphony. Bruckner is also said to have been afraid of this fatal number: “I don’t want to start on my Ninth at all, I don’t dare.” He died while working on the fourth movement.
