It is one of the great traditions of the BRSO to offer musicians from its own ranks a forum for solo performances. In this concert, the audience can look forward to hearing concertmaster Anton Barakhovsky and principal cellist Sebastian Klinger, who have already been featured once before. For his concert rhapsody Tzigane, written in 1924, Ravel wrote a violin part of almost unparalleled virtuosity, combining it in a fascinating way with the improvisational gestures of so-called gypsy music. Ligeti’s 1966 Cello Concerto is equally breathtaking: it successfully combines dense soundscapes and dramatic gestural effects. Three popular concert classics, Ravel’s Boléro, his ballet music Ma mère l’oye, and an early Ligeti work, the Concert Românesc based on Romanian folk music, complete the program. On the podium will be Shiyeon Sung, a South Korean conductor, who had her BRSO debut at musica viva in 2022.
