Who is actually a hero or a heroine? The old stories, as told in fairy tale books or on the opera stage, are teeming with them. There, heroic men pass difficult tests and virtuous women sacrifice themselves for love. Do these role assignments still make sense to us today? We critically and closely question operas and fairy tales with music by Ravel, Mozart, Beethoven, Bizet and Piazzolla. An interactive lecture concert with musicians from the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin

Students explore the meaning of symbols and signals in music through two works by contemporary composer Nicolaus A. Huber, heard live at the NOW! Festival. Bells and the number "four" (representing wholeness and order) serve as key symbols. Students compose their own music, culminating in a concert performance.
