Today’s theme is: power. With: Jurriën Hamer.In this Reflect with Bach, philosopher, lawyer and writer Jurriën Hamer reflects on the theme of power. His story is interwoven with parts of three cantatas by Bach that form the base for his magnum opus, the Mass in B Minor. Jurriën Hamer studied law and philosophy at Utrecht University. In 2022, he published his first book: ‘ Waarom schurken pech hebben en helden geluk: een nieuwe filosofie van de vrije wil’ (Why Villains Always Lose and Heroes Win: a new philosophy of free will). As a writer, speaker and moderator, he shows how philosophical ideas about justice, guilt and free will have a huge influence on our lives, in an accessible, humorous and inspiring way.This concert is part of the series Reflect with Bach.Please note: the spoken language of this series is Dutch.

Today’s theme is: power. With: Ewoud Kieft.In this Reflect with Bach, writer and historian Ewoud Kieft reflects on the theme of power. His story is interwoven with parts of three cantatas by Bach that form the base for his magnum opus, the Mass in B Minor. Ewoud Kieft is a writer and historian and studied at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He wrote seven books and hundreds of articles (in NRC, De Groene and de Volkskrant, among others), including The banned book Mein Kampf and the appeal of Nazism (2017) - which was nominated for the Libris Geschiedenis Prijs and won the Kleio Klasseprijs - and Concerto, a music history of Amsterdam (2021). Today’s theme is: compassion. With: writer Marjolijn van Heemstra.In this Reflect with Bach, poet, writer, theatre maker, journalist and podcast maker Marjolijn van Heemstra talks about the theme of compassion. The music, by Bach and his contemporaries, is played by young Baroque talents of the Netherlands Bach Society’s Young Bach Fellowship, conducted by violinist Antoinette Lohmann. In her work, Marjolijn van Heemstra takes an accessible approach to investigating how we can think differently about ourselves and the world. She has won various literary awards for her collections of poems and novels, and her latest novel ‘In Search of a Name’ has been published in translation in eight different countries. Her non-fiction book ‘In Light-Years There’s No Hurry’, about the quest for more space in our lives, was voted NPO Radio 1 Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2021.

Today’s theme is: crisis. With: Beatrice de Graaf.In this Reflect with Bach, Professor of History of International Relations Beatrice de Graaf reflects on the theme of crisis. Her story is interwoven with music by Bach, led by gambist and core member of the Bach Society Mieneke van der Velden. Beatrice de Graaf is a historian and professor at Utrecht University. She researches the history of terrorism, war and violence. She makes regular appearances as a terrorism expert and her publications include ‘Tegen de terreur’ (Fighting Terror) and ‘Radicale verlossing’ (Radical Salvation). In 2018, she was awarded the highest Dutch academic honour, the Stevin Prize, for her work.This concert is part of the series Reflect with Bach.Please note: the spoken language of this series is Dutch.

Out and About with the Hänneschen Theatre

Who doesn't know Cologne's Hänneschen Theater? Like the Gürzenich Orchestra, it's a quintessentially Cologne institution. And this year, both are celebrating anniversaries: 222 years of the Hänneschen Theater and 25 years of Ohrenauf! To mark the occasion, the two greats of the cultural landscape are teaming up for a joint production. But not on the big stage, but down-to-earth in the community center around the corner. With a small ensemble of musicians and puppeteers, we are bringing a musical, Cologne version of the well-known Sleeping Beauty story directly to Cologne's neighborhoods and to the people. Our motto: Leave the concert hall and enter the city.
