This exceptional clarinettist from Sweden loves to push musical boundaries and try out new forms of performance. One reason why contemporary artists often entrust him to perform their newly written works. The British composer Anna Clyne wrote »Weathered« for Martin Fröst: a much-celebrated work for clarinet and orchestra, which Fröst premiered in the spring of 2023 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Now he performs it for a new audience in Hamburg. Anna Clyne knew exactly who she was writing for: »Weathered« places the highest demands on the individual performing it. So high, in fact, that some critics have speculated that only time would tell whether a second clarinettist would be able to play the work. Trills, glissandi and sharply articulated passages alternate with beautifully melodious moments. Each of the five movements has its own description – a rusted bridge, a broken heart, a wind-worn castle, a majestic forest, and a warming planet. Interpreting the contrasting sections, Fröst uses his instrument to elicit fluttering turns and even mimicking shawm sounds. Christian Măcelaru conducts the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. He is also principal conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra and Orchestre National de France, and also brings a folksong-like work by his fellow countryman, the Romanian Constantin Silvestri, to add to the programme. The real highlight of his conducting though is the Symphony No. 3 by Sergei Rachmaninov. In his final symphony, the Russian exile resurrects the great legacy of Romanticism with powerful assurance. Yet Rachmaninov speaks his very own language, leading rapturous melodies through twists and turns that are harmonically astonishing.

It only lasts seven minutes, but it is nonetheless monumental: Arnold Schoenberg’s melodrama »Ein Überlebender aus Warschau« (A Survivor from Warsaw). Schoenberg had readopted the Jewish faith, and he wrote the piece, which opens with a fierce trumpet signal, in 1947 to commemorate the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto. The score mixes the narrative of a man hiding in the sewers with German commands, martial rhythms – and finally the hopeful Hebrew words »Schma Yisrael«, which the Jews use to prepare for death. The part of the narrator is taken by Dominique Horwitz, himself the son of Jewish parents. The French-German actor and chansonnier is in great demand for performances of literary works of music, from Tom Waits’s »Black Rider« to Stravinsky’s »Histoire du soldat«. And the soloists in the second part of the programme likewise have resounding names: among them are the American soprano Susanna Phillips, alto Gerhild Romberger and baritone Michael Nagy. »War and Peace« is the motto of the Hamburg International Music Festival, and chief conductor Alan Gilbert and his NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra place the emphasis on a work of hope and brotherly love: Beethoven’s world-famous Ninth Symphony. The overwhelming finale culminates in Friedrich Schiller’s lines »All men shall be brothers«, which win the day against all the powers of destruction. Beethoven not only touched a nerve in his own time by ending the symphony with a large-scale chorus of rejoicing: nowadays, everyone is familiar with the melody in the guise of the European anthem. Even the playing time of a compact disc, when the CD format was introduced, was geared to enable Beethoven’s oversized Ninth to be played without a break.

Semyon Bychkov very much regrets having to withdraw from the concerts due to a planned hip operation. Jonathan Bloxham, whose concerts in September 2023 with works by Britten and Mendelssohn may still be remembered by NDR subscribers to the G and H series, will take over as conductor instead. The Briton, currently Music Director of Lucerne Theatre and Chief Conductor of the Northwest German Philharmonic Orchestra, was mentored by none other than Paavo Järvi, has conducted orchestras such as the London Symphony and BBC Symphony Orchestra and is a regular guest of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Before embarking on his conducting career, he enjoyed success as a cellist with the Busch Trio. The programme remains unchanged. Manfred Honeck, who has been chief conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for more than 15 years, still returns to conduct the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra each year. After presenting the sensational programme »Mozart and Death in Words and Music« last season, this year’s programme is all about love after death. In Greek mythology, the heroes who were particularly beloved by the gods found eternal peace on the »Isles of the Blessed«: Elysium. The Berlin-based Canadian composer Samy Moussa has dedicated a musical work to this paradise. It was premiered in Barcelona in 2021 and subsequently given its first German performance by Manfred Honeck. The musical depiction of the eagerly desired reward for all earthly toil is now also being performed at the Elbphilharmonie. It’s no coincidence that Honeck has chosen to programme Moussa’s work, which was certainly inspired by Anton Bruckner’s expansive style, just before the latter’s Ninth Symphony. Moussa’s piece thereby functions, in a way, as a prologuing fourth movement to the deeply religious composer’s »Unfinished« Symphony – as a forecast of where everything could, in the end, lead. »And now I dedicate my last work to the majesty of all the majesties, the beloved God, and hope that he will give me so much time to complete the same,« Bruckner allegedly said during work on his monumental Symphony in D Minor – although this wish was ultimately not granted. He died while working on drafts for the finale.But even without this closing movement, the symphony bears all the features of an »opus ultimum«, a summary of all that constitutes Bruckner’s tonal language. The suspenseful opening phase, for example, that is a feature of every single one of his symphonies, is carried to extremes here with an extra-long preparation phase. Nowhere do things get as wild as in the Scherzo of the Ninth, and nowhere does the listener feel that Elysium is closer than in the magnificent Adagio, which fades away with reminiscences of previous Bruckner symphonies.
