Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen rose from the ashes of wartime Germany, asking difficult questions even as it lays bare its heart. Brahms, meanwhile, wrote his Second Symphony on the sunlit slopes of the Austrian Alps – but happy memories have their own truth, and Edward Gardner and violinist Isabelle Faust will bring the same insight and commitment to every note, whether tragic, troubled or glowing with joy.

Dackl trifft Brahms & Strauss | Schultour

School music classes get a special treat: chamber music ensembles will visit schools and play music by Brahms and Strauss. A lively dachshund character, Dackl, will present videos explaining the music and lives of the composers. This event is part of ARD Music Week.

There’s certainly nothing earthbound about our soloist – the award-winning Korean violinist Hyeyoon Park has been described as ‘a marvel’. Her performance is the big, warm heart of a concert that opens with Schumann’s swashbuckling overture and ends with Brahms’s last symphony – tragedy, tenderness and defiance, told straight from the heart.

Alain Altinoglu continues his Brahms cycle with the 3rd Symphony, aiming for a fresh, agile sound. This sunny symphony is paired with Brahms-Haydn connections, featuring award-winning hr solo trumpeter Sebastian Berner performing Haydn's Trumpet Concerto. Altinoglu emphasizes transparency over opulence in Brahms's "symphonic forest idyll." Brahms's "Variations on a Theme by Haydn" complements the program, although the theme's origin is debated.
