Die Konzertreihe "Sonus feminæ" eröffnet ihre Saison mit dem literarisch-musikalischen Abend THE WOMAN QUESTION. Im Mittelpunkt steht Christine de Pizans bahnbrechendes Werk „Das Buch der Stadt der Frauen“, ein Meilenstein der feministischen Literatur aus dem Jahr 1405, und die „Querelles des Femmes“, der hitzige Geschlechterstreit der frühen Neuzeit. Das Ensemble Cité des Dames und das Gastensemble Trio Tiefsaits führen u.a. Werke aus der Sammlung von Margarete von Österreich, Kompositionen von Maddalena Casulana sowie Barbara Strozzi auf. Unter der Regie von Iñigo Giner Miranda werden die Werke durch die Sprecherin Cathrin Romeis in einen lebhaften Dialog mit historischen Textausschnitten gebracht. Prof. Margarete Zimmermann bietet mit einem aufschlussreichen Vortrag zusätzliche Einblicke in die Debatten und Gedankenwelten des Mittelalters und der frühen Neuzeit.

Probably France’s largest 17th century festival comes to life again here: the wedding between the »Sun King« Louis XIV and the Spanish princess Marie-Thérèse ended the long-standing hostility of both countries in 1660 and was fittingly ostentatiously celebrated, firstly on the Spanish border, then in Paris. Thereby, a large-scale musical setting befitting their social status from sacred works via fanfares to dance and opera should also be included. Vincent Dumestre, with his period performance orchestra Le Poème Harmonique and vocalists, has put together a splendid panorama of French baroque music, which transforms the entire Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall into a royal ballroom. The proverbial timpani and trumpets sound, there is a lot of music by Jean-Baptiste Lully – Louis XIV’s favourite composer – and by Francesco Cavalli, who travelled from Italy to Paris for the wedding specifically for performances of his operas. This programme incidentally evolved from Dumestre and his ensembles for the Palace of Versailles, which the Sun King had built as an overflowing, sumptuous structure – also to make space for the theatre, ballet and opera performances he so loved. Today, the stars of the early music scene take golden hammers into their hands here and sound repertoire gems of the 16th to 18th century.

The British Guardian called the ensemble Les Musiciens du Louvre »one of the best orchestras in the world«. Founded in 1982 by the conductor and oboist Marc Minkowski, it is not the Louvre’s official orchestra – no such ensemble exists. But the reference to the world-famous Parisian museum already illustrates the musicians’ mission: to bring the art of earlier centuries to life at the highest level. Appropriately enough, their forthcoming guest appearance in Hamburg at Easter features a Handel oratorio about the Resurrection of Christ. Composer George Frideric Handel found himself in a double bind in 1708. Firstly, the Pope had imposed a complete ban on opera performances because he feared a series of earthquakes meant that the end of the world was imminent, and restricted sinful entertainment in favour of religious art. This was a problem for Handel, who was an opera man to the core, both artistically and financially. Secondly, he wanted to present a piece about the Resurrection punctually for the Easter weekend, but having Jesus Christ appear on stage in person was an even greater taboo than opera per se. Pragmatic as ever, Handel arrived at the following solution: in his original oratorio »La Resurrezione«, angels and the Devil, apostles and Mary Magdalene debate about the Crucifixion. And in the end, the music itself turned out quite operatic after all.
