A completely new approach! His best-known piece »4’33’’« doesn’t have a single note: 4 minutes and 33 seconds of tense silence – that too, according to Cage, is music. At the Hamburg... John Luther Adams: Become Ocean

Sat, May 10, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Basel Sinfonietta, Andreas Haefliger (Piano), Titus Engel (Conductor)
»Life on our planet developed in water. If the polar ice caps melt and the sea level rises, it will end up in the water again.« Based on this simple yet harrowing prediction about the future of humanity, Alaskan composer and environmental activist John Luther Adams wrote his opulent orchestral piece »Become Ocean«, which won a Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy. Hardly any other work could be better suited to the motto of the Hamburg International Music Festival – »Future«. It will be performed by one of the best orchestras for new music, the Basel Sinfonietta under its chief conductor Titus Engel. It is preceded by one of the most rousing piano concertos of the 21st century, premiered at the 2019 London Proms. The Swiss composer Dieter Ammann once again proves himself to be an accomplished composer who is just as happy incorporating influences from his past in funk and jazz bands as he is elements from early modern music. At the piano: Andreas Haeflinger, whose first performance of the work in Boston in 2019 was hailed as an »elemental event« – both here and at a subsequent performance in Lucerne.

Philharmonic chamber music Piano quintets by Mozart and Beethoven with Kit Armstrong

Tue, Feb 11, 2025, 20:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Chamber Music Hall (Berlin)
Jelka Weber (Flute), Dominik Wollenweber (Oboe), Andraž Golob (Clarinet), Stefan Schweigert (Bassoon), Johannes Lamotke (French horn), Kit Armstrong (Piano)
“It is the best thing I have written in my life”, declared Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1784 of his piano quintet. Many of his most famous works had not yet been written, but the quintet remains a Mozartian jewel, with its melodic beauty and charming dialogues between the instruments. It is no wonder that the young Ludwig van Beethoven was inspired by Mozart’s example to write an equally enchanting quintet. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker play both works with pianist Kit Armstrong. Contemporary counterpoints are provided in the form of wind quintets by Hans Werner Henze and Wolfgang Rihm.

Rakhi Singh

Mon, Jun 24, 2024, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Rakhi Singh (Violin)
Rakhi Singh is one of the leading figures on Great Britain’s contemporary instrumental scene. Composer, ensemble founder, violinist – there seems to be nothing that the English musician with Welsh-Indian roots cannot tackle. She fills each of her roles with a passion that casts a spell on the audience without fail, and her violin recitals, where she makes no bones about crossing genre boundaries, are usually sold out. For tonight’s solo recital, Singh has made new arrangements of Baroque works for solo violin, which she juxtaposes with music by contemporary New York composers like Michael Gordon and Julia Wolfe as well as with two leading lights of today’s British music scene, Alex Groves and Edmund Finnis. Discount for all under 30: Exclusively for this concert, anyone under 30 can book the REDticket. This means that even the best available seats only cost € 12. Proof of age must be shown when attending the concert, otherwise the difference to the original price will have to be paid.
