The »St John Passion« is one of the most important and moving compositions in the history of music. In the 300 years since its premiere, it has not lost its emotional impact with which Johann Sebastian Bach set to music the suffering of Jesus Christ. Composed for Good Friday in 1724, this great work now sounds on the same bank holiday at the Elbphilharmonie. The period ensemble Pygmalion plays under the direction of its conductor Raphaël Pichon. At nine years old, the French Pichon sang the »St John Passion« for the first time – a crucial experience for the singer and conductor. For many years, Bach’s music remained and forms the core repertoire of the Pygmalion ensemble, which Pichon established in 2007. Historically informed and always with a fresh look at the music, these concerts are hailed by audiences and critics. The musicians play instruments which originate from the time of the Passion or were replicated and ensure a unique listening experience. Renowned tenor Julian Prégardien is also involved in the role of the evangelist.

The St. John Passion deals with Judas' betrayal, Jesus' capture, interrogation, and crucifixion, culminating in comforting words of faith.

Thank goodness for Mendelssohn! If the 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn had not brought Bach’s »St Matthew Passion« back to light in 1829, after it had lain forgotten in some archive since the first performance a century earlier, an incomparable masterpiece would be missing from the concert and church music repertoire. More than that, in fact: with his revival of the »St Matthew Passion«, the young composer kicked off a massive renaissance of Bach’s music that has lost none of its momentum to this day. One of the core works in this Bach revival is the »St Matthew Passion«, whose dramatic density and brilliant musical structure cast a spell over audiences 300 years ago, as they still do today. The Easter masterpiece is performed tonight at the Elbphilharmonie by a team of experienced Bach specialists: Philippe Herreweghe conducts the Collegium Vocale Gent together with a hand-picked line-up of soloists. A musical experience that will certainly stay with the audience long after the concert is over.

In January 2023, the audience in the Elbphilharmonie responded to the performance of Bach’s St John Passion with the Gaechinger Cantorey with minutes of cheering. »There was a lot to celebrate«, commented Marcus Stäbler for the Hamburger Abendblatt at the time, citing the »eye for the big picture«, the »dense arc of tension«, the »sense of context« and the »flair for detail« in Hans-Christoph Rademann’s interpretation. Now the long-established ensemble of the International Bach Academy Stuttgart is returning to the Elbe with the St Matthew Passion. The monumental oratorio with nine soloists, two choirs and a double orchestra immerses the audience in a deeply spiritual, moving and poetic experience. Bach’s depiction of Jesus’ last hours offers a journey through the human soul in the spirit of the Protestant tradition of the time. He masterfully brings the sacred text to life with vivid harmonies and exquisite interplay between soloists and choirs. With a hand-picked choir, a first-class baroque orchestra and outstanding soloists, Hans-Christoph Rademann presents a renewed and faithful version of this highlight of vocal music of all time.
