Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele

The Frankfurt Radio Symphony will perform at the Schwetzingen SWR Festival in early May. The festival opens with the premiere of Mike Svoboda's "Adam und Eva," a music-theater piece for six singers, an actor, choir, and orchestra based on Peter Hacks's comedy and commissioned by SWR and Landestheater Linz.

With his cycle Má vlast, Bedřich Smetana created a musical declaration of love for his Czech homeland – its landscape, its history, its legends. Kirill Petrenko presents the six symphonic poems of the cycle, each of which takes us into very different Romantic sound worlds – sometimes majestic, sometimes dramatic, sometimes lyrical, but always full of Bohemian musical elan. The best-known work from it is undoubtedly The Moldau, a lively, folkloric tone poem that portrays the river of the same name.

The Fifth Symphony is a work with which Anton Bruckner fought for public recognition. In it, he reveals himself to be a gifted musical architect, bringing together voluptuous melodies, solemn chorales and sophisticated contrapuntal structures to create a symphonic monument. Kirill Petrenko conducts Bruckner with the Berliner Philharmoniker for the first time.

Beethovenfest Bonn

Im Anschluss an die Frankfurter Konzerte gastiert das hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt mit Ivan Repušić beim Beethovenfest Bonn. Auf dem Programm stehen neben einer Ouvertüre von Dora Pejačević die Uraufführung eines neuen Werks für Violine, Violoncello, Klavier und Orchester des katalanischen Komponisten Ferran Cruixent, das vom Beethovenfest in Auftrag gegeben wurde, sowie Antonín Dvořáks 8. Sinfonie.

Notre-Dame de Paris

In early summer 2025, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and chief conductor Alain Altinoglu will perform in Paris. At Notre Dame Cathedral, they will premiere Thierry Escaich's "Te Deum," composed for the cathedral's reopening.

SWR Symphonieorchester

Sheku Kanneh-Mason, renowned for his captivating performance at the 2018 royal wedding, is a celebrated cellist. His passion for the instrument ignited in childhood, inspired by Jacqueline du Pré's rendition of Elgar's Cello Concerto. This program features Elgar's Concerto and Brahms' Symphony No. 4, a work described as possessing "unprecedented energy" by Hans von Bülow.

Johannes Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15, will be performed by pianist Alexandre Kantorow, the SWR Symphony Orchestra, and conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada.

Les Métaboles / SWR Experimentalstudio

In his late work, Luigi Nono always also transformed the music into moving ambient sound. To achieve that, he regularly worked with the legendary SWR Experimentalstudio. One example is his vocal and instrumental work »Diario polacco No. 2«, in which electronic sounds permeate the hall. His work »›Hay que caminar‹ sognando«, in contrast, features two violinists wandering from one music desk to the next. Under conductor Léo Warynski, the Les Métaboles vocal ensemble and the SWR Experimentalstudio remember Nono the political man. When martial law was introduced in Poland in 1981 he wrote »Quando stanno morendo / Diario polacco No. 2« and dedicated it to persecuted Polish friends and comrades. Nono composed »›Hay que caminar‹ sognando« in 1989, one year before his death. With its »choreographic« arrangement, it epitomises an inscription, seen on a monastery wall, that had fascinated Nono: »Wanderer, there is no path. All that matters is the walking.«
