Richard Strauss – a celebrated composer, a politically controversial cultural figure and unquestionably an artist ahead of his time – is the subject of this concert’s musical portrait. Those who knew him described him as someone with a great sense of humour who never let fame go to his head. He loved music, his family and playing cards (and is even said to have been a good loser). Those who knew him described him as someone with a great sense of humour who never let fame go to his head. He loved music, his family and playing cards (and is even said to have been a good loser). He first began composing at the age of six. His famous tone poem »Ein Heldenleben« marks his first major achievement in the art of orchestration. Critics accused him of shameless self-aggrandizement in this work, but Strauss responded: »I am not a hero. I don’t have the strength for it. I’m not fit for the battle. I prefer to stay in the background, in a quiet place ....«

Bertrand de Billy, Kit Armstrong

Konzerthalle Bamberg, Joseph-Keilberth-Saal (Bamberg)
Bertrand de Billy (Conductor), Kit Armstrong (Piano)
How is the house built? When are the roof, walls and floors added? And will the structure be able to support itself? These are the questions of an architect – but they can also be the questions of conductors when they approach musical structures with their very own style and passion. It is therefore hardly surprising that Bertrand de Billy, who was already fantasising about becoming a conductor at the age of four, once said: »If it hadn’t worked out with music, I would probably have been an architect.« From an early age, he carefully observed the movements of conductors – whether from the choirboy's perspective or as an orchestral musician. Today, he conducts numerous renowned orchestras himself. His specialities include classics and key works of the 20th century and, as a native of Paris, time and again declarations of love for French music. With us, he combines Gershwin and Ravel, two composers who knew each other well and both absorbed the other’s idiom. Ravel’s dazzling piece »Daphnis et Chloé« is a fairytale story about two foundlings, which premiered in the French metropolis in 1912. Gershwin’s pulsating piano concerto also has something to do with the city of love: although it was composed in 1925 in the jazzy melting pot that is New York, large parts of it were later woven into the film »An American in Paris«. As a congenial sound designer, Bertrand de Billy will work with us and the pianist Kit Armstrong to delicately emphasise the different currents and similarities of the compositions like a musical architect: Because he never wants to be an overbearing chef d'orchestre, but simply to be an artist among artists: »The fulfilment of creating something together is indescribably beautiful.«

Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra / Kent Nagano

Sun, Feb 2, 2025, 11:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Chor der Liatoshynskyi Capella, Katharina Konradi (Soprano), Ida Aldrian (Soprano), Seungwoo Simon Yang (Tenor), Jóhann Kristinsson (Bass), Jens Harzer (Narrator), Bogdan Plish (Choir rehearsal), Kent Nagano (Conductor)
The programme for the 6th Philharmonic Concert includes a world premiere that reflects our times. Jörg Widmann, who has been in close artistic contact with Kent Nagano, particularly since the great success of his ARCHE for the opening of the Elbphilharmonie, has recently written a decidedly peaceful work in view of the global wars: »Cantata in tempore belli«. Jens Harzer takes on the role of narrator. Ida Aldrian sings the alto part.

Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra / Kent Nagano

Sun, Jan 12, 2025, 11:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Karen Cargill (Mezzo-Soprano), Stuart Skelton (Tenor), Pierre-Laurent Aimard (Piano), Kent Nagano (Conductor)
Bringing Gustav Mahler’s »Das Lied von der Erde« to the stage always takes us on a path down into the depths of late-Romantic turn-of-the-century aesthetics. Of course it is poetry that forms the foundation of the work – albeit thoroughly dubious due to the fact that the words have been translated back and forth so many times from the Old Chinese. So the six songs, the last of which is by far the most weighty, therefore do indeed need to be read primarily in terms of the music and regarded as Mahler’s unofficial Ninth Symphony, as it were. He did allude himself to this way of looking at the work – and also stressed that »Das Lied von der Erde« was »probably the most personal thing ... I have done so far.«

Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra / Kent Nagano

Sun, Jun 29, 2025, 11:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Audi Jugendchorakademie, Mojca Erdmann (Soprano), Evan Hughes (Bariton), Kent Nagano (Conductor)
In this concert, which concludes Kent Nagano’s ten-year tenure as General Music Director, two essential strands of his concert dramaturgy for Hamburg come together. On the one hand the reference back to tradition, and the Hamburg-based composer Johannes Brahms to be precise, whose four symphonies have been performed by the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra both in its Hamburg concerts and on tour in recent years. And then sounds of the present day, in the form of pioneering world premieres. A brief review conjures up performances of Widmann’s ARCHE, Dusapin’s »Waves«, and Shepherd’s »On a Clear Day«, to name just a few outstanding new works. This concert – a crowning finale and farewell at the same time – sees the premiere of a new symphony by the young Argentinian composer Alex Nante, in his inimitably dreamlike, spiritual sound language.
