Saint Petersburg, October 28, 1893. Nine days before his death, Peter Tchaikovsky conducts the premiere of his Sixth Symphony. He refers to it as a "program symphony" - with a secret program, that is top secret: "It is of a nature that it will remain a mystery for everyone! The work progressed so passionately, so quickly, that in less than four days I had the first movement completely finished and the other movements were already clear in my mind!" As if he had foreseen that he did not have much time left for composing. This symphony, with the nickname "Pathétique," is a truly dramatic, tragic, gripping, very passionate masterpiece - peculiar and unique. Grade levels: 7-10

A music that doesn't need any explanation, that one understands all by itself? That's what the French composer Hector Berlioz wanted when he wrote his "Symphonie Fantastique." He was heartbroken and composed his experiences directly into the music. In fact, while listening, we can imagine someone falling in love, experiencing happiness with their beloved woman, and how love fails. But of course, there are still some open questions - how does Berlioz manage to create so many different timbres? What role do the individual instruments play?
