With technical brilliance and emotional insight, the young Ukrainian pianist Illia Ovcharenko presents a daring programme that really packs a punch. In the fifth and final concert of the Liszt spotlight in 2023/24, he combines two visionary Romantic piano works: Franz Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor and Robert Schumann’s Fantasie in C. Each in its own way, these works break down musical boundaries and still get even the most experienced pianists sweating. With stamina and uncompromising expressiveness, and pushing the... Discover Talent: Dmytro Choni / Piano Recital

Dmytro Choni (Piano)
»For me, success means continually growing both as a musician and a person, and never ceasing to search for the truth in music.« Dmytro Choni’s maxim speaks for his artistic maturity – as does the list of his musical partners and of the venues where he has already appeared. The Ukrainian pianist was born in Kyiv in 1993; he had his first piano lessons when he was four, and is currently a student at the University of Music and the Fine Arts in Graz. He has worked his way to the top of his field, and it’s a little surprising that he has only recently been discovered. All the better, then, that he can be heard this season with a recital programme that directly reflects his complex artistic personality.

Discover Talent: Roman Fediurko / Piano Recital

Sun, Feb 9, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Roman Fediurko (Piano)
The name Roman Fediurko is one to remember: at the beginning of 2023, the then 18-year-old won first prize and the audience prize at the Düsseldorf Robert Schumann Competition – by no means his first victory at a prestigious competition. His nuanced playing and interpretative maturity, which is far ahead of his age, were particularly impressive. The young Ukrainian has been studying with Milana Chernyavska in Graz since 2021 – as has his younger brother Oleksandr, with whom he presents captivating four-hand arrangements of works that are not typical for the piano, such as Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango, on a CD and in concert. This stylistic diversity and chamber music flair also characterise Roman Fediurko’s performance in »Discover Talent«: alongside piano classics such as works by Mozart, Rachmaninov, Chopin and Beethoven, he presents preludes by his compatriot Lewko Rewutzkyi – a tribute to the rich culture of his war-torn homeland.

Discover Talent: Giorgi Gigashvili / Piano recital

Giorgi Gigashvili (Piano)
»He is a particularly great talent. I was fascinated by his incredible intuition when we played together. He also plays jazz and pop, composes and sings. The new generation is very open and flexible,« enthuses violinist Lisa Batiashvili about the young pianist Giorgi Gigashvili. The Georgian initially opted for a career as a singer and arranger of pop and folk music. In the end, however, he dedicated himself to playing the piano – and quite successfully at that. In recent years, he has won numerous prestigious piano prizes, most recently 2nd prize at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in 2023. The openness praised by Batiashvili is also reflected in Giorgi Gigashvili’s programme. In addition to works by Ravel and Prokofiev, the programme also includes two rarely heard composers: Josef Bardanashvili and Galina Ustvolskaya.

Zhouhui Shen (Piano)
With an impressive interpretation of Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 7, Zhouhui Shen earned her place in the final of the International Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn in 2023. The Chinese pianist, who was born in 2001, was subsequently celebrated as a »shining star« – and rightly so! After all, she has already won numerous prizes at national and international competitions, including the Juilliard Piano Concerto Competition 2022 and the International Grotrian Piano Competition 2018. In Bonn, Zhouhui Shen won third prize with Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto. And the young pianist also performs Beethoven in her ProArte concert: in addition to his Six Bagatelles, Op. 126, the audience can look forward to works by Rachmaninov and Debussy.

Discover Talent: Arsenii Moon / Piano recital

Arsenii Moon (Piano)
He is a »sound magician«, his »fine and brilliant technique full of nuances«, his »very personal« style with a »unique sense of poetry in music«. They are all right, these reviewers who praise Arsenii Moon for his artistic qualities. After all, the native of St Petersburg in his mid-20s is already a household name to many in the piano world. His latest coup: at the Busoni Competition in 2023, he not only won first prize and four special prizes, but also the Benedetti Michelangeli Prize, which is only awarded in the event of a unanimous jury decision – i.e. rather rarely, the last time being almost 30 years ago. Arsenii Moon makes his Hamburg debut with a programme that is as varied as it is demanding, ranging from Bach to Chopin and Rachmaninov.
