Discourse in the Philharmonie “Between the election of Donald Trump and the forthcoming Bundestag elections: What does the new year hold for Germany?”

Date & Time
Tue, Dec 10, 2024, 20:00
Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election will change the country: democracy is in danger, observers believe, and society could become more divided. However, Germany is also facing major changes following the collapse of the “traffic light coalition”. A new federal parliament is due to be elected in February 2025. What will both events mean for German politics? The long-serving Governing Mayor of Berlin and current SPD member of the Bundestag Michael Müller and playwright and director Patty Kim Hamilton discuss this with Christiane Florin.

New Year at the Philharmonie

Wed, Jan 8, 2025, 20:00
Bernhard Forck (Conductor), Anna Prohaska (Soprano), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
She’s got it, that certain something stars are made of: Anna Prohaska. Recalcitrant look, cheeky wisecracks, an avowed metal fan, yet at the same time thoughtful, deep. »I love being on stage,« she says, and she evidently finds the right tone for each and every musical style, even in operas with »rather convoluted language«. With her luminous soprano, she will rejoice in Mozart’s motet ›Exsultate, jubilate‹, taking it to soaring heights. Hallelujah!

Matinee of the Friends of the Berliner Philharmoniker e. V. “Introduced: New Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker”

Sun, Jun 22, 2025, 11:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Main Auditorium (Berlin)
A welcome matineeEvery orchestra is a living organism and is constantly changing: With the Berliner Philharmoniker, too, familiar faces leave and retire year after year. New musicians come in their place - and many of them quickly become audience favourites. We would like to use the summer matinee to introduce you to some of these newcomers. Among them is first principal viola Diyang Mei, who has already made history by being the first Chinese to join the orchestra. He has lived in Germany since 2014, where he won the prestigious ARD Music Competition in 2018. You can also look forward to the new principal timpanist, the young Austrian Vincent Vogel, who inherited his teacher Rainer Seegers in this position in 2022: almost a Philharmoniker dynasty. A total of four new members will be available to answer questions at this welcome matinee. And, of course, they will also inspire you with their instrumental skills.

It goes without saying that The Concertgebouw and jazz & pop music make a perfect combination. The stages of both the Main Hall and the Recital Hall have borne witness to nearly the whole of jazz history. Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald have both performed here, as have Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong. Famous pop stars and bands that have graced the stage of the Main Hall include Frank Zappa, the Doors and the Eagles, to name but a few. Legendary concerts, in the present as well as the past.

What do the alpine horn and the organ have in common? / Torlontano / Di Lernia

Sun, Dec 8, 2024, 12:00
Carlo Torlontano (Alphorn), Francesco Di Lernia (Organ)
Although the organ is traditionally associated with sacred music and grand concerts, it can also be a fascinating complement to less typical chamber settings. The untypical combinations in this year’s organ concert series provide unique sounds and new, unexpected combinations. The result? We become more open to new interpretational possibilities and free experimenting. True to its "geographical" name, the alpine horn was often used in the Alps as a shepherd's instrument, its sound echoing through mountain valleys, serving both as a means of communication and in folk music. Hence the presence of such pieces as the traditional melody In den Alpen in the programme. This will be completed by the pastoral compositions by Leopold Mozart and Anton Zimmermann, Arcangelo Corelli’s baroque concerto arranged by Francesco Di Lernia, and contemporary compositions by Arvo Pärt and Giovanni D’Aquila. This diverse repertoire will take listeners on a journey across eras and musical styles, towards discoveries of new, surprising sounds. Alexandra KozowiczConcert duration: approximately 80 minutes
