Love, witchcraft, severed heads – it’s all here, in psychedelic colours, and you’d better believe that it’s a hard act to follow. That’s why Edward Gardner and the superb violinist Augustin Hadelich are setting the scene with Britten’s powerful Violin Concerto, and with the world premiere of Sphinx by David Sawer – a British composer whose raw imagination can give even Berlioz a run for his money.

At Essentials we welcome a new generation of music lovers, and the concerts typically have a pleasant informal atmosphere.Grand, epic, mysterious: Jean Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony is an enigma. ‘It was as if God the Father was throwing pieces of mosaic from the edge of heaven and asking me to figure out what the pattern was,’ wrote Sibelius of composing the symphony, inspired by the vast natural landscapes of Finland. The Fifth is sombre in character, the composer having suffered from deep depression. But the sun gradually broke through, and the music culminates in a radiant and sublime ending.Sibelius’s symphonies fit Santtu-Matias Rouvali like a glove, and he has been a welcome guest with the Concertgebouw Orchestra since his first appearance in 2020. Petrushka, the Russian version of Punch, falls in love with a ballerina. But she has eyes only for the Moor. Petrushka causes chaos at the carnival and is eventually stabbed. Now Petrushka is dead. Or is he? Who rears his head there? Just as the magician in the story brings his wooden puppets to life, so Stravinsky the musical wizard conjures up images in the mind. In Tristan und Isolde, he aims his telescope at a young couple in love. When Gustav Mahler came to Amsterdam to conduct the Dutch premiere of his First Symphony in 1903, a close collaboration started – so began the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s much-vaunted Mahler tradition. Klaus Mäkelä steps into that tradition with respect and self-confidence. He previously gave stunning interpretations of the Sixth and the Third, now it is time for the First, which he calls Mahler's 'pastoral’ symphony: ‘I’ve always been attracted to its imaginative beauty, and its freshness. The expression is extremely clear, and it contains all the elements of his later work.’Klaus Mäkelä opens the concert with Verklärte Nacht by Mahler's contemporary Arnold Schoenberg, who was born 150 years ago in Vienna. The late-romantic work is based on a poem by Richard Dehmel about a woman who confesses to her loved one that she is carrying someone else’s child. The music closely follows the conversation and draws the listener into an intimate emotional journey leading from fear and guilt to pure happiness.

Andrew Manze strikes a passionate blow for Bruckner’s Second Symphony. ‘From the yearning, desolate opening to the self-assured, triumphant ending, the Second Symphony is a gem that has for too long been inexplicably overlooked, even by many Bruckner lovers’, the conductor says. Up to now, only five conductors have led the Concertgebouw Orchestra in this work – its last performance was conducted by Riccardo Chailly in 1992. Now Andrew Manze is taking up the gauntlet.After moving to Vienna, Bruckner set to work on his Second Symphony, a work in which we can hear him finding his own voice. In addition to the long-drawn-out opening theme, folk dances and quotations from his own oeuvre, the influence of the Viennese Classics is clearly audible – that of Beethoven in particular, but Wagner and Schubert as well. Andrew Manze pairs Bruckner’s Second with the most serious of Schubert’s first six symphonies, the Fourth.
