Techno in the concert hall – what may seem odd at first glance turns out to be an innovative blend on closer listening. Pianist and producer Francesco Tristano, a Juillard graduate and bridge builder between classical and popular music, has worked with conductor Dzijan Emin to devise a concept that skilfully blurs the barriers between the genres. In an atmospheric concert experience, the familiar sound of a classical symphony orchestra blends with the avantgarde textures, sounds and rhythms of electronic music. And when the timeless works of Johann Sebastian Bach flow into the intricately woven compositions of Dzijan Emin and Francesco Tristano over the course of the evening, the gap between the musical worlds suddenly no longer seems so wide. At the climax of the concert evening, the electronic setup takes centre stage: in a new version of Francesco Tristano’s piano concerto, the dynamic interaction of the classical orchestra sound and electronic music reaches new heights. It finally culminates in the techno anthem »Strings of Life«, composed in the heart of Detroit, which has lost none of its expressive power even after almost 40 years.
Listen, join in, have fun, discover music – the radio3 Children’s Concerts of the DSO are the perfect introduction to the wonderful world of classical music. In six concerts per season, children of primary school age can get to know the orchestra’s enchanting sound machine in all its facets. Together with the DSO, moderator Christian Schruff takes the six to twelve-year-old concertgoers on entertaining and interactive voyages of discovery, tells exciting stories, and presents great music. Already before the concert, at the Open House in the foyer, the young music fans can get to know various instruments together with members of the orchestra, have their faces painted, do crafts, sing, and much more.
In Yasmin Zaher’s debut novel The Coin, the narrator is a wealthy Palestinian woman with impeccable style and meticulous hygiene. She lives in New York and struggles with an ideal of self and an ideal of life that are just out of reach: her inheritance is inaccessible, her homeland exists only in her memory, and no amount of scrubbing and cleaning satisfies her growing obsession. As her protagonist desperately strives to put down roots and gain control over her circumstances, the novelist herself reflects on the significance of developing Palestinian characters that are as liberated as they are imperfect. A reading from the novel and following conversation will explore the material and existential aspects of statelessness, vulnerability, and resilience as well as the possibilities of art in times of darkness. Yasmin Zaher is a Palestinian writer and journalist who was born in Jerusalem. She earned a BSc in Biomedical Engineering at Yale University and an MFA in Creative Writing at The New School, where she was advised by Katie Kitamura. As a journalist, she has written for Haaretz and Agence France-Presse. She currently lives in Paris. The Coin, her first novel, has been called “a smart, sneering novel of capital and its consequences” by the New York Times. Presented in English Featuring a musical performance by Barenboim-Said Akademie student Eden Meyer Khaiat
