Giuseppe Verdi is the only composer featured on the program of this year’s Open Air at Odeonsplatz with the BRSO conducted by Christian Thielemann – and yet, this is a program rich in contrasts. First, there is ballet music that Verdi added in some of his operas in order to please the dance-obsessed Parisian audience: the Witches’ Dance from Macbeth, a dance interlude during the coronation festivities in Don Carlo, and the ballet music in Otello. The orchestra will then join forces with the BR-Choir and perform Verdi’s musical testament: the Quattro pezzi sacri. The four movements comprising the work are Verdi’s last sacred compositions. While Verdi was not religious, he nevertheless wanted to take this work with him in afterlife: “With this hymn of praise I will go before God and beg him for mercy.”

Among conductors, Giovanni Antonini continues to number among the “savages” who use ultra-brisk tempos to breathe unparalleled passion and vivacity into the music of bygone eras. In the meantime he no longer specialises in Baroque music, but increasingly devotes himself to the Classical and early Romantic periods. Between Mozart’s “Little” G minor Symphony and Haydn’s “Drumroll” Symphony (written for London), the soprano Lydia Teuscher will sing three famous concert arias by Mozart and Mendelssohn. The Mozart arias were originally inserted into comic operas by other composers; today they can be heard in concert as precious gems in their own right. Mendelssohn composed his aria of love and vengeance for Maria Malibran, placing at her side a poignant violin solo to be played by the virtuoso Charles-Auguste de Bériot, her lover at the time and later her husband.

There are impressive careers that one can only imagine at first. But they sometimes become reality: Petr Popelka’s love of music blossomed when he was a small child. He first formed a musical partnership with the double bass and played in the Staatskapelle Dresden for ten years. He composed on the side to keep his inner balance – but his fervent desire to conduct eventually grew stronger and stronger. And then everything went very quickly: he put his double bass bow aside and is now one of the most inspiring artists of the new generation of conductors, for whom mutual respect is always important when working together. Since this season, he has been Chief Conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker, but other orchestras are also courting the rising star. Fortunately, the likeable musician is already one of our recurring guests: we share the Bohemian soul with the Prague-born conductor – which is why it was »love at first note« when he made his debut in Bamberg in 2022. We are now looking forward to explore the dazzling scores of Schubert, Strauss and Ravel with him, as well as Christian Gerhaher’s current favourite songs, which are far from the usual vocal cycles. Petr Popelka is known for his varied programmes and also for bringing each piece to life with his unique, emotional and refreshing interpretations. He loves the passionate working relationship between him and our musicians, as he once emphasised: »There really is a great open-mindedness in the orchestra – and a willingness to give the best. I feel incredibly comfortable!«
