Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Moses Mendelssohn Kammerorchester, Joanna Kamenarska (Violin), Clemens Malich (Conductor), Landesjugendorchester Hamburg, Naomi Seiler (Viola), Bar Avni (Conductor)
Old meets new and the familiar meets the strange and fairytale-like in the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra’s 2nd Academy Concert, when the propulsive, youthful freshness of the just-turned-seventeen Mozart meets the relatively unknown Romantic sound of Hamburg-born Ferdinand David. Things take an atmospheric turn with Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose music is a resounding reflection of his origins and homeland in England. Just like Edvard Grieg’s »Peer Gynt« from Norway.

Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra

Sat, Mar 29, 2025, 11:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra (Orchestra), Christoph Gedschold (Conductor)
The Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Christoph Gedschold, presents a profound programme: Haydn’s »Farewell Symphony« and Wagner’s »Prelude« and »Liebestod« from »Tristan und Isolde« reveal a close relationship in terms of content, as death and farewell are fundamentally related. Schumann’s 2nd Symphony is diametrically opposed to this, even though this work was composed during a period of deep crisis in the composer’s life.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra / Anne-Sophie Mutter / Fabio Luisi

Tue, Jun 11, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Anne-Sophie Mutter (Violin), Fabio Luisi (Conductor)
This was essentially an artists’ friendship that was highly improbable: Anne-Sophie Mutter, international classical music star from Germany, and the legendary American soundtrack composer John Williams. But that’s only one side of the story. On the other hand, Anne-Sophie Mutter loves cinema, and is a great fan of John Williams, about whom she says that he has a genius for »building bridges between different musical languages«. John Williams wrote his jazz-inspired Second Violin Concerto especially for Anne-Sophie Mutter, whom he in turn admires greatly. She has already recorded it on CD, and now presents it to the German public in a series of top-class live concerts.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra / Anne-Sophie Mutter / Manfred Honeck

Tue, Sep 3, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Anne-Sophie Mutter (Violin), Manfred Honeck (Conductor)
»It’s a stroke of genius. This music is immortal,« Anne-Sophie Mutter enthused about Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto back in 2009. The star violinist is not alone in this opinion: since its premiere, the captivating work has delighted performers and audiences alike – no wonder, given the abundance of musical beauty it offers. At first, Gustav Mahler could only dream of such a sensational success for his Fifth Symphony: »The Fifth is a cursed work. No one understands it,« he grumbled, disappointed about the lack of understanding that the monumental work was met with everywhere. However, it is also possible that Mahler was simply overtaxing the listening habits of the time. Today, Mahler’s Fifth is his most popular symphony and it is impossible to imagine the repertoire of concert halls around the world without it. And when a world-class orchestra like the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra offers a performance, nothing stands in the way of a great concert evening!

Vienna Philharmonic / Lorenzo Viotti

Tue, Jun 18, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Wiener Philharmoniker, Lorenzo Viotti (Conductor)
Was it winter when Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov wrote his »Capriccio espagnol«? One can certainly vividly imagine the composer well warpped-up and seated before the fireplace as he dreamt his way to warmer regions. But whenever it was written, the work conjures up the flamenco, fiestas and mild nights under a southern sky. With their musical journey beyond the boundaries of space and time, the fantastic Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of young Swiss conductor Lorenzo Viotti once again show that their reputation as one of the world’s best orchestras is well-deserved. Sergei Rachmaninov’s »Toteninsel« (Isle of the Dead): is a strong contrast to Rimsky-Korsakov’s »Capriccio«. Inspired by an Arnold Böcklin painting, the composer depicts life after death in the swelling, rushing sound of infinity. And in his Seventh Symphony of 1884, Antonín Dvořák likewise portrays a different world: with dramatic conflicts and echoes of Bohemian folk songs, the music dreams of the political independence of the Czech Republic, which was still part of the Hapsburg Empire at the time.

Munich Philharmonic / Daniel Harding

Tue, Apr 16, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Münchner Philharmoniker, Daniel Harding (Conductor)
Daniel Harding is by no means a stranger to the Munich Philharmonic. The British conductor regularly works with the venerable orchestra, which celebrated its 130th anniversary at the beginning of the season. An eventful time full of musical highlights: there is surely no other orchestra that performs the great repertoire as magnificently and colourfully as the Philharmonic from the Bavarian capital. Take Gustav Mahler’s phenomenal Symphony No. 5, for example. When it was premiered in 1904, the large-scale work, with its five expansive movements, broke through the boundaries of what had previously been considered possible. Surrounded by an infernal orchestral frenzy, the fourth movement alone provides some sense of relaxation. After it was featured in Visconti’s film »Death in Venice«, this enchanting adagietto became Mahler’s most popular creation. With his 1926 symphonic poem »Tapiola«, a musical invocation of the Finnish forest god Tapio, Jean Sibelius composed his last great orchestral work.

Czech Philharmonic, Semyon Bychkov (Chef d'orchestre et directeur musical du Czech Philharmonic), Marielle Labèque (Piano), Katia Labèque (Piano)
Who better than Katia and Marielle Labèque—surely the most famous piano duo of our day—to render the spirit of Mozart’s sublime concerto? Mahler’s Fifth Symphony then draws us into a whole other world, with its opulence and taut expression.
