For years Mariss Jansons was the principal conductor of both the BRSO and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. If gifted young musicians from two academies now assemble in Munich for a concert, they do so in memory of this great conductor, who left an indelible imprint on both orchestras. Jansons had a firm commitment to talented young orchestral musicians, and the idea of the academy continues in his spirit, helping graduates to find their way into professional orchestras. Now, for the first time since their initial exchange of 2019, the two academies reunite in a concert that straddles the boundaries of Germany and the Netherlands. Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, George Benjamin’s modernist take on Purcell and Richard Strauss’s Suite from Der Bürger als Edelmann give these young musicians ample opportunity to display their prowess under the baton of Daniel Harding.
Female composers have long been overlooked throughout history. This concert will showcase many of them, including Clara Schumann, Lili Boulanger, Rebecca Clark, Isabella Leonarda, Marie Jaëll, Mélanie Bonis, Maria Theresia von Paradis, and Emilie Mayer. The concert, including intermission, will last approximately 110 minutes.

Jahrhunderts, die gleichwohl zu den produktivsten Komponistinnen ihrer Epoche gehörte, oder bei Marie Jaëll, einer französischen Pianistin und Komponistin des 19. Jahrhunderts. Auch die Französin Mélanie Bonis, deren Werke im 19. Jahrhundert meist unter dem Pseudonym Mel Bonis publiziert wurden, kennt man hierzulande kaum, ebenso wie die österreichische Pianistin, Sängerin und Komponistin Maria Theresia von Paradis, die seit ihrer Kindheit blind war und im Musikleben ihre Zeit, der Wiener Klassik, zugleich sehr prominent. In diesem Konzert kann man sie alle kennenlernen, wie auch Emilie Mayer, eine deutsche Komponistin des 19. Jan Lisiecki and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields radiate pure joy of playing. This was already evident in 2018, when the young pianist saved a concert tour of the traditional British ensemble and stood in for Murray Perahia, who was ill, with all five Beethoven concertos - including at the Konzerthaus Berlin. The applause was enormous and the album with the live recording was a great success. Since then, this connection has been a very special one. Experience the Academy and the Canadian-Polish pianist once again with Beethoven: the fifth and final piano concerto and the triple concerto, in which concertmaster Tomo Keller and cello star Daniel Müller-Schott join Jan Lisiecki.
The Orchestra Academy run by the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra is intended to prepare highly talented young instrumentalists for a career as a professional musician in a major international orchestra. The 15 academy members become a part of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra for two years. Their annual chamber music concert gives them the stage alone for the evening. They present their skills in the Recital Hall of the Elbphilharmonie, sometimes in classical formations and sometimes in more unusual groupings.
