From a young age, the brothers Erik, Ken and Mark Schumann were deeply absorbed by the subtleties of chamber music. Then, when they were joined by violist Veit Hertenstein, the Schumann Quartet launched an international career, garnering the highest praise for their “dazzling virtuosity” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). For their debut in our series, the quartet has chosen Mozart’s galant A major Quartet and the dark First Quartet by Prokofiev, influenced by Beethoven’s quartets. These will also be represented by the Op. 127 quartet, from Beethoven’s audacious late period.

The Leonkoro Quartet has enjoyed a meteoric rise to success. Founded in 2019, the ensemble is already at home on international concert stages, making its celebrated Philharmonie debut in February 2024. “The Leonkoro Quartet’s risk-conscious power of intensity is legendary. Its virtuosity is unbelievably natural,” wrote the Tagesspiegel afterwards. The young musicians return this season – with an energetic string quartet by our composer in residence Wolfgang Rihm, who died in July of this year, a wonderfully melodic opus by Felix Mendelssohn, and a key work from Beethoven’ s late oeuvre.

They have been making music together for over 40 years: as the Hagen Quartet, the three siblings Lukas, Veronika and Clemens Hagen with violinist Rainer Schmidt have reached the top of their field with their unerring sense of style, beauty of tone and potent expressiveness. Viennese Classicism has always been a major focus of the Salzburg-based ensemble. In this concert, we will hear two late quartets by Haydn and Beethoven which bear witness to both composers’ inexhaustible invention and innovative boldness. Maurice Ravel’s elegant, poignant quartet shows the genre from a French perspective.

Silk and bamboo – these are the fabrics used to produce the finely woven traditional music of south-east China. Pipa virtuoso Lingling Yu takes this fine art from her adopted home of Geneva out into the world with a young quartet of other traditional instruments. Lingling Yu comes from the nine-million-strong metropolis of Hangzhou, south of Shanghai, a centre of the silk and tea industry and also China’s own Silicon Valley. Even as a teenager, she was considered a child prodigy on the pear-shaped pipa, a necked bowl lute originally fitted with silk strings. In 1998, Yu moved to Switzerland in order to establish ties between Chinese and Western music, broadening her horizons by studying orchestration, counterpoint and composition. In addition to the pipa, her Silk and Bamboo Quartet brings together other traditional instruments: Wenqi Gu plays the guzheng, a 21-string, 2,500-year-old arched zither. The internationally experienced Guo Gan brings the erhu and gaohu violins to the quartet; he is also well versed in Western classical music and jazz. The quartet is completed by the young Hongze An, who has a command of the bamboo transverse flutes dizi and xiao, the mouth organ sheng and the bawu with its clarinet-like sound. Alternating between solo and ensemble performances, the group’s repertoire includes pieces from the south-east of China and the provinces of Canton and Yunnan as well as from the cities of Chaozhou and Hangzhou.

For four days, the Recital Hall is dedicated to Mahler's most beautiful songs. A special recital is dedicated to his wife Alma, combining pieces by her with those by friends. Perhaps today's most important Lieder accompanist, pianist Julius Drake, flanks his favourite vocalists during all these concerts. Today you will hear French soprano Axelle Fanyo, a 'true storyteller' according to Forum Opéra. She shares the stage with one of the greatest Dutch talents, baritone Raoul Steffani.Austrian Alma Maria Schindler was introduced to her future husband, Gustav Mahler, by her composition teacher Zemlinsky. Under Mahler's name, she would become known - but never primarily as a composer. Mahler did not want his wife to write any more music, and Alma herself also had doubts about her work. Although most of it has been lost, her late-romantic, often melancholic songs are still widely performed. Here today in the Recital Hall, they alternate with pieces by friends and acquaintances. Axelle Fanyo and Raoul Steffani perform songs by Ernst Krenek, Mahler's son-in-law. You will also hear works by Berg, Korngold and Stravinsky.
