The Conflict over the Conflict: Israel/Palestine and German UniversitiesPanel Discussion Few current topics have polarized German society as strongly as the Middle East conflict and the relationship to Israel and Palestine. Since the Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7, 2023, which caused the deaths of more than 1,200 people and led to the taking as hostages of more than 200 others, and Israel’s subsequent war on Hamas in Gaza, which has killed tens of thousands of civilians, violence in the region has only escalated, as has the fierceness of the debate in Germany. Universities have become a point of particular focus: as places of protest, eagerly watched by the media, but of course also as places of scholarship and expertise. While considering the causes and dynamics of the current polarization, the panel will address a number of crucial questions: What kind of potential does scholarly debate possess in times of crisis? Which role should universities play in society and what are the conditions that enable them to fulfill this role? How does the scholarly discourse on Israel/Palestine differ between German universities and universities in the English-speaking world? How much freedom does scholarly discourse require, and where should the limits of dialogue be set? Jacob Eder will lead a discussion of these questions with Johannes Becke, Miriam Rürup, and Eckart Woertz. Johannes Becke studied political science at the University of Heidelberg, at the University of Illinois, and at Cairo University. Since 2020 he has been Professor of Israel and Middle East Studies and held the Ben-Gurion Chair at the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies. His research focuses on modern Israeli society and Arab-Israeli relations. Miriam Rürup studied history, sociology, and European ethnology at the universities of Göttingen and Tel Aviv. From 2012 to 2020 she was director of the Hamburg Institute for the History of the German Jews. Since then, she has served as director of the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European-Jewish Studies at the University of Potsdam. Eckart Woertz studied political science, political economics, and Islamic Studies in Erlangen, Damascus, and Berlin. Since 2019 he has been Professor of Contemporary History and Politics of the Middle East at the University of Hamburg and Director of the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies. He previously held positions at the Barcelona Center for International Affairs, Sciences Po in Paris, Princeton University, and the Gulf Research Center in Dubai, and has worked for banks in Germany and the United Arab Emirates. History in ComicsBook Launch of the Graphic History Oberbrechen: A German Village Confronts Its Nazi PastReading and Discussion No period of German history has been studied more thoroughly than the Third Reich, and no era has more frequently been the subject of scholarly, non-fiction, and fiction books as well as films and TV shows. As the publication of Oberbrechen: A German Village Confronts Its Nazi Past impressively demonstrates, however, new approaches may lead to new perspectives on the Nazi era and its aftereffects. Oberbrechen examines the complex relationships between Jewish and non-Jewish inhabitants of the eponymous Hessian village. The book is conceived as a graphic history, exploring the microcosm of a village and showing how “one’s own” history of violence was being negotiated during the Nazi era and how the local population dealt with the ubiquitous yet largely unspoken presence of the Shoah. One question stands at the center, exemplified by the village of Oberbrechen, which is equally relevant for many other places in Germany: How did the different degrees of participation in anti-Jewish exclusion, and the individual local experiences of violence, affect subsequent encounters between those driven out and those who remained, as well as their family members, in the years after 1945? Authors Stefanie Fischer and Kim Wünschmann will discuss these topics with Stefanie Schüler-Springorum and Jacob Eder. Stefanie Fischer is a senior lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin’s Center for Research on Antisemitism. She has published numerous studies on German-Jewish history and the history of the Holocaust. Among her most recent publications are Jewish Cattle Traders in the German Countryside (2024) and “Jewish Mourning in the Aftermath of the Holocaust: Tending Individual Graves in Occupied Germany, 1945 – 1949” (in: Aya Elyada, Kerry Wallach, eds., German Jewish Studies: Next Generations, 2022). She is also co-editor of the Leo Baeck Institute Year Book. Kim Wünschmann is director of the Hamburg Institute for the History of the German Jews. Her work is focused on German-Jewish history and Holocaust Studies, the history of law and diplomacy, as well as comics and graphic novels. Her publications include Before Auschwitz: Jewish Prisoners in the Prewar Concentration Camps (2015) and “Gezeichnete Erinnerung: Zeitzeugenschaft und Geschichte in Comics und Graphic Novels” (in: Matthias Bahr, Peter Poth, Mirjam Zadoff, eds., Aus der Erinnerung für die Gegenwart leben, 2022). Stefanie Schüler-Springorum is an historian who has been director of the Technical University of Berlin’s Center for the Study of Antisemitism since 2011. From 2001 to 2011, she served as director of the Hamburg Institute for the History of the German Jews, and from 2009 to 2019, as chair of the Scholars’ Consortium at the Leo Baeck Institute. Since 2012 she has been co-director of the Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies in Berlin-Brandenburg. In Yasmin Zaher’s debut novel The Coin, the narrator is a wealthy Palestinian woman with impeccable style and meticulous hygiene. She lives in New York and struggles with an ideal of self and an ideal of life that are just out of reach: her inheritance is inaccessible, her homeland exists only in her memory, and no amount of scrubbing and cleaning satisfies her growing obsession. As her protagonist desperately strives to put down roots and gain control over her circumstances, the novelist herself reflects on the significance of developing Palestinian characters that are as liberated as they are imperfect. A reading from the novel and following conversation will explore the material and existential aspects of statelessness, vulnerability, and resilience as well as the possibilities of art in times of darkness. Yasmin Zaher is a Palestinian writer and journalist who was born in Jerusalem. She earned a BSc in Biomedical Engineering at Yale University and an MFA in Creative Writing at The New School, where she was advised by Katie Kitamura. As a journalist, she has written for Haaretz and Agence France-Presse. She currently lives in Paris. The Coin, her first novel, has been called “a smart, sneering novel of capital and its consequences” by the New York Times. War Crimes and Fig Leaves: Litigating Human Rights in Israeli Courts Talk and Conversation Since October 2023, a legal avalanche has toppled Israel’s international standing. The country’s High Court of Justice was for many decades entrusted with articulating the scope of permissible behavior under domestic and international law and with shaping the lives of Palestinians and Israelis. But the war on Gaza has prompted international legal bodies to step in and issue new injunctions, advisory opinions, and arrest warrants aimed at upholding core norms of international law against Israel’s actions. What explains this change of attitude toward the country’s legal system and its ability to address human rights violations? A historical reassessment of many decades of constitutional and human rights litigation in Israeli courts traces the roots of their recent fall from grace to a series of concrete failures. Michael Sfard is an Israeli human rights lawyer specializing in international human rights law and the laws of war, with a special emphasis on the law of belligerent occupation. He serves as the legal adviser to several Israeli human rights and humanitarian organizations as well as peace groups, including Yesh Din, Breaking the Silence, and Peace Now. He also represents Palestinian communities as well as Israeli and Palestinian activists and advises international human rights and humanitarian NGOs. He frequently publishes opinion pieces in the Israeli and international press and serves as commissioner in the International Commission of Jurists. His most recent book, The Wall and the Gate: Israel, Palestine and the Legal Battle for Human Rights, was published in 2018. David Wagner’s novel Verkin takes the reader on an adventure from the Bosporus through Türkiye and across three continents, on a search for clues between Orient and Occident, deep into the tumultuous 20th century. It is the story of a peculiar friendship and of an extraordinary woman. A cat is brought to Berlin from Lake Van in Anatolia, a cat with one blue and one brown eye. At the welcome party given in its honor, the novel’s narrator meets the person who brought the cat and asks himself: Who is this Turkish-Armenian woman named Verkin who looks like an astronaut in her shiny metallic dress? Soon he travels to Istanbul himself to work on a new book, carrying in his luggage various German meat products as gifts to Verkin in return for the cat. No sooner has he arrived than he is being seduced: by the stories from her almost fairy-tale life. Together the two drive through the city and across the Bosporus, they travel to the Lycian coast, visit the ruins of thermal baths, roll through Anatolia in the dining car, and eventually reach Lake Van on the Iranian border. Verkin tells of her childhood in Istanbul and of her ancient Armenian family; of grandmothers who in 1915 survived the killings and displacements, and of her father, who built the largest electricity company in Türkiye; of Swiss boarding schools and of Paris in 1968; of lucrative deals in East Berlin and of artist circles in New York City in the 1970s; of her men, among them two Germans; and of a nearly fatal accident that sent her on a yearslong odyssey, of her commitment to the Armenian heritage; of her struggle against patriarchy and of her political work; of a country and a life full of contradictions. Born in 1971, David Wagner made his literary debut with the novel Meine nachtblaue Hose. He has since published many other books, including a collection of short stories, Was alles fehlt, a volume of prose writings, Spricht das Kind, the essay collections Welche Farbe hat Berlin and Mauer Park, the childhood memoir Drüben und drüben (with Jochen Schmidt), the novel Vier Äpfel, which was long-listed for the German Book Prize, and Ein Zimmer im Hotel. He was awarded the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for Leben in 2023; the following year he received the Kranichsteiner Literaturpreis and was the inaugural Friedrich Dürrenmatt Guest Professor for World Literature at the University of Bern. In 2019, Der vergessliche Riese won him the Bavarian Book Prize as well as a place on the shortlist for the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize. His books have been translated into many languages. The documentary film Seven Winters in Tehran tells the story of Reyhaneh Jabbari, who was arrested and charged with murder in 2007. While ample evidence indicated that the 19-year-old woman had acted in self-defense against a man who attacked and attempted to rape her, the court still sentenced her to death. Seven Winters in Tehran draws on personal and secretly recorded videos provided by Reyhaneh’s family, as well as on their testimonies, on letters written from prison, and on other archives, to retrace the trial, detention, and fate of this woman who became a symbol of resistance. Her fight for dignity, truth, and justice continues to echo and inspire the struggle of many others today. Steffi Niederzoll studied audiovisual media arts at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in Cuba. Her short films have been screened at numerous national and international film festivals, including the Berlin Film Festival. She has taught master classes in film directing and has held a scholarship from the Tarabya Cultural Academy in Türkiye. Her interdisciplinary artistic work with art collectives has been presented at the Brecht Festival in Augsburg, the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde and Vejle, Denmark, among others. Together with Shole Pakravan, she wrote the book How to Become a Butterfly about Reyhaneh Jabbari (2023). Seven Winters in Tehran is her first feature-length documentary. Shole Pakravan was born in Kermanshah, Iran, and graduated from the University of Arts in Tehran with a degree in puppetry. She married Fereydoon Jabbari and had the first of her three daughters, Reyhaneh, in 1987. She performed on Iran’s stages for nearly three decades and managed a collective cultural center. Following the arrest and sentencing of her daughter, she began to advocate against her execution, sparking a worldwide outcry in 2014.
