Colourful, festive, refined – Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Organ Symphony” surprises us not only with its unexpected use of the organ, but also with its delicate sound textures. Kazuki Yamada, chief conductor of the orchestras in Birmingham and Monte-Carlo, conducts the work in his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker; the organ part is played by Sebastian Heindl.The symphany will be preceded by two different kinds of water music: Ottorino Respighi’s gaudy, shimmering tone poem Fontane di Roma and Tōru Takemitsu’s mystical I Hear the Water Dreaming, featuring our solo flautist Emmanuel Pahud.

Organist Iveta Apkalna and the Alinde Quartet conclude their Philharmonic portrait concert series with a joint performance. Their program spans diverse musical eras, including a new piece by Hindemith Prize winner SJ Hanke. Beginning with a Mozart church sonata, they showcase individual brilliance, with Apkalna celebrating Philip Glass's soundscapes and the Alinde Quartet performing Respighi's Quartetto dorico.

Richard Strauss liebte Don Quijote, der sich mutig allen Herausforderungen, Hindernissen, Höllen entgegenwirft, ohne je einen entscheidenden Sieg zu erringen. Diesen »ritterlichen Charakter« feiert Strauss in seinen »Phantastischen Variationen« von 1897. Solistische Extraklasse bietet zudem Konzertmeisterin Christina Brabetz, die mit Maurice Ravels Tzigane (1924) eines der virtuosesten Geigenstücke der Musikliteratur zum Besten gibt. Ottorino Respighis Pini di Roma (1924) ist wiederum ein Städtetrip für die Ohren. Er führt von der Villa Borghese zur Via Appia, stets die hochgewachsenen Wunderbäume im Blick, die Pinien von Rom, eine Art Lebens-Ader, die sich dauergrün durch die alte Metropole zieht. James Gaffigan kompiliert drei wunderbare Konzertstücke, die unterschiedliche Stile ins Spiel bringen. So überschreitet Strauss die Grenzverläufe zur Moderne, und Respighi schreibt 1924 bereits im Modus kommender Filmmusik. Das wird berauschend.
